ReMaCon Products are manufacturers of precast concrete retaining wall blocks in Gauteng, referred to generically as CRB's, we also offer structural retaining block wall designs.

The product range includes the ReMblok 30 system with concrete reinforced extension pieces, ReMRock 220 for low earth wall support used in garden landscaping, Scooploc and Terraforce range of L11 and L18 retaining blocks, including Terrafix channel lining and embankment erosion control blocks used on spillways, abutments, river banks and dam walls, and Terracrete grass block paving, “4 x 4 Multi” step block and stadium seating system used for school sport stadiums, and amphitheatres.

Retaining wall blocks are sometimes combined with gabions and reno mattresses. Interlock soil retainer blocks, earth reinforcing, or ‘cement’ retaining blocks supporting or holding soil back or retaining earth, are used on steep slopes to retain earth, reinforce soil or reinforce earth embankments, either as gravity retaining walls, or as facing earth support elements for geofabric reinforced walls. Gentler sloping embankments can be tiered with terrace block walls forming a series of low retained wall heights with level terraces in between. Landscape retaining walls and garden walls are aesthetic retaining walls, they can curve and are also available in “rock face” textured facings to be attractive and environmentally pleasing, while serving as an engineered designed retaining structure. DIY retaining walls are possible for earth retaining and wall reinforcement.

The ReMblok 30 system is an anchor retaining block soil retaining system, whereby the block with extension combination, is a retaining wall soil reinforcement system. Retaining stabilization is also achieved by retaining wall backfill with geotextile reinforcement.Terracrete grass blocks interlock and can be used for paving grassed roads, parking areas, driveways and panhandle tracks. They are also suitable for stabilizing embankments such as bridge abutments. They can be used as permeable paving for light traffic areas, or as permeable drains on the side of roads with a stone and perforated pipe combination below, allowing water to drain away, or to filter back into the soil. Retaining landscaping applications using blocks holding soil have become popular due to versatility and easy of DIY installation.

Free standing walls and boundary walls, replacing masonry walls, can also be built using the Terraforce L11 or L18 blocks with rock face aesthetics, which are mortarless dry stacked, requiring block voids to be filled and tamped with soil and depending on heights, hidden piers are cast within the wall by placing steel inside the blocks tied into the foundation and filling the void columns with 25MPa concrete to form an internal column.

RemBlok 30An innovative new design, ReMblok 30, not only provides much safer and more durable crb walling – for open “checker board” configurations - but is also extremely cost-competitive, with a minimum product cost saving of between 35% for a double skin (700mm deep) wall, and 52% for a full triple skin (1050mm deep) wall in Gauteng.

RemRock 220 is suitable for garden and non-structural landscaping.  The newest product is a standard "rock face" texture in a natural "sand" colour.

Terraforce L18Choose between round face, (plant supportive) or flush face to suit your requirements. Units are light in weight for easy delivery, handling and installation, yet heavy when filled with soil, gravel, or concrete. Cuts evaporation, improves drainage, allows for effective backfill compaction. Plant growth deters graffiti!

ReMaCon Products of Gauteng has negotiated the exclusive rights for local manufacture of concrete retaining blocks designed for construction of retaining walls to over 20 m in height.

This versatile eco-surface hard lawn paving block that was introduced to the South African market by Terraforce in 2002. The units can be laid in different patterns and may be used with or without ground anchors for the lining of riverbanks and other areas subjects to soil erosion.The paving of grassed roads and parking areas, as well as the stabilising of steep embankments such as bridge abutments can be undertaken with these versatile blocks. 

 

 

 

Terrafix blocks are specifically designed to provide a flexible lining where cost effective protection against wind and water erosion is required. Terrafix is an interlocking environmentally acceptable element, made of high strength concrete. It was specifically designed to provide a flexible lining where cost-effective protection against wind and water erosion is required. They are available in three different thicknesses and can be laid in a variety of configurations to suit most site conditions.

This makes it the ideal product to help combat the rapid degradation of our rivers and streams, caused by unbridled urbanisation and poor farming practices all over South Africa and the world. Terrafix can help prevent our soil being eroded away, while still being permeable enough to help preserve our precious ground water reserves and biodiversity.

The elements are made out of durable concrete and therefore can safely be used in most saline or polluted conditions. Units interlock laterally and offer a secure yet flexible lining.

They are highly permeable but can be made impermeable by either placing an impervious membrane underneath the blocks or by grouting the structure with concrete or mastic.

The system offers one of the most cost-effective and speedy erosion control methods and provides a perfect regime for establishing vegetation. Stability improves as vegetation takes root.

Terrafix units are available in three thicknesses, namely 100, 120 and 150 mm. They can be laid in different configurations ranging from four blocks to 10 blocks per square metre. This way over-design and overspending is avoided.

APPLICATIONS

Embankments and slope stabilisation:

Road and railway bridge abutments can be protected against wind and water erosion with good effect and erosion problems or aesthetic considerations of embankments and cuttings can be effectively countered with the TERRAFIX system. Protection is offered to a varying degree by allowing the choice of appropriate laying patterns and thicknesses.

Sites subject to wave erosion may be protected with TERRAFIX. The lining can be strengthened with ground anchors or made impervious by employing partial or total concrete or mastic grouting. Hydrostatic pressure relief openings must be provided where necesarry.

 

The system lends itself to providing an effective lining for river banks, canals, resevoirs and lakes. Under such circumstances it is essential to carefully design a suitable filter underneath each structure in order to prevent leaching of fines. Woven or non-woven geotextiles are considered to be most suitable .

Erosion at the toe of the bank is prevented by continuing the lining to below anticipated depth of scour. Below the waterline, cells should be filled with coarse material and with topsoil above normal waterline. Graded rock or woven/non-woven geotextile filters are to be provided where necessary, to prevent leaching of fine soil particles.

The elements are used for lining dam spillways and sloping weirs, storm water attenuation ponds or downstream aprons. They are also ideal for lining water courses of varying sizes from small ditches to large canals. In designing such structures a roughness coefficient of 0.04 (CERC 1984) has to be assumed.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

A feasibility study into the hydraulic applications of the TERRAFIX system by the division of Earth, Marine and Atmospheric Science and Technology of the CSIR has revealed very positive characteristics. A copy of this report is available on request.

The Multi 4x4 is a step block that can be used for all formats of seating arrangements, but also provides stairway access in combination with Terraforce retaining walls.The unique design allows you to make plants part of your wall and the units are simply stacked up without mortar to provide a cost effective, do-it-yourself system. The corner interlock gently handles convex and concave curves, and the wall angle can vary from vertical to shallow slopes.
